UGC National Eligibility Test (NET) notification for December 2014

Thanks a lot for your superb response to my earlier post related to UGC NET exam June 2006.

May readers have asked questions related to eligibility, process and other related topic on the same post so it still make sense to read the earlier article.

This year, there are few more changes. Incapable UGC no more handling NET exam, rather CBSE is handling the exam (exam, not assessment). 

UGC (University Grants Commission of India) has announced notification for NET December 2014 exam.

NET (National Eligibility Test) is conducted to determine one's ability to be appointed as a lecturer in any state, central, private and deemed universities in India and also for Junior Research Fellowship. It is also accepted for Ph.D admission in various universities.

Here are few FAQs

1. What is the eligibility for NET
You should be a post graduate after completing 3 years degree with minimum 55% aggregate mark. (50% for SC, ST and OBC only) Your post graduate degree should be of at least 2 years duration (only LLM is an exception) or equivalent. The equivalent degree must be validated by AIU (for instances all 2 years AICTE approved PGDM holders are not eligible for NET, only those whose PGDM has been granted equivalence status by AIU stands valid.
The degree must be from a UGC approved university.
The degree must have been approved by respective council such as AICTE, MCI, NCI, NCTE and so on.
Degree of an approved foreign university but obtained through distance, online, offline, on campus fully or partially in India is not valid.
Distance / correspondence/ open university degree from India from a UGC approved university with DEC/ DEB approval and without violation of UGC norms in distance education like territorial jurisdiction are also valid.

Candidates applying for the above mentioned exam should not be below 18 years of age  and should not exceed 28 years as on 01/01/2014.
Educational qualification
For JRF post – Candidates should hold BE/ B.Tech/ MBBS/ Integrated BS-MS/ M.Sc./ B.Sc. (Hons)/ Integrated MS-PhD or equivalent degree with at least 60% marks from  a recognized university.
For NET: There is no change
Application fee
Unreserved/General candidates- Rs 400/-
OBC candidates- Rs. 200/-
Reserved SC/ ST/ PH/ VH candidates- Rs. 100/-

2. I have obtained a degree from a UK University but through its partner institute in India. Am I eligible for NET?
No

3. I have done 2 years distance PG Diploma in management from SCDL, Welingkar, NMIMS, IMT etc. am I eligible for NET?
No

4. Do I also need to have B.Ed/ M.Ed. alongwith my post graduation to become eligible to appointed as a teacher/ lecturer in a college/ university?
No. You need to qualify NET and must be within cut off of UGC

5. Are all those who qualify NET are eligible to be appointed as a lecturer?
No. UGC every year defines cut off of the NET qualifiers to be appointed as a lecturer. You need to be on that list.

6. I have completed my graduation and post graduation in distance mode from IGNOU. Am I eligible for NET?
Yes, you are

7. I have done a distance learning PG from The Global University and passed in 2014. Am I eligible for NET?
No. the degree is not approved from DEB

8. Is there any age limit for NET?
No, there is no age limit for NET however for JRF, it is maximum 30 years.

The University Grants Commission (UGC) National Eligibility Test (NET ) is to be conducted on June 29 for recruitment of candidates at the post of Assistant Professor or Junior Research Fellowship (JRF).
NET will be conducted in 79 subjects at 86 coordinating institutions across the nation. The last date to apply online for the same is May 5.
But, how to apply?
Here is a list of steps for submitting the online application forms:
  • Candidates are required to have a scanned passport size photograph in JPEG format of less than 300 kb to be attached along.
  • After candidates fill in all the details, the system will automatically generate a 'Bank Challan' that will include all the details of the candidates.
  • Candidates are required to take a print out of the challan to be able to make the payment through cash. The candidates are required to make the payment through any of the branches of State Bank of India on the next working day.
  • Two days after the payment through the bank challan, candidates are required to check the fee payment status at the official website.
  • Once the status turns 'OK', candidates are required to take a print out of the online application form, attendance slip and admission card on separate A-4 size papers.
  • Candidates are then required to send the application (application form and attendance slip) along with bank challan and other required documents to the Registrar/ Principal of the coordinating institution.
  • Candidates are required to super scribe "UGC NATIONAL ELIGIBILITY TEST FOR JUNIOR RESEARCH FELLOWSHIP AND ELIGIBILITY FOR ASSISTANT PROFESSOR, DECEMBER, 2014" on the application form.
  • Candidates are required to retain the admission card with them to be brought on the day of examination after affixing the self attested passport size photograph. The photograph should also be attested by the head of the University Department/ Principal of the College/ class-I Gazetted officer.
  • Application fee should be mentioned category wise as instructed in the notification.
    Filled application should be sent to the below address so as to reach the destination on or before 13thAugust 2014.

  • Last date of submission of fee through online generated bank challan, at any branch of State Bank of India (SBI): 23. August 2014
  • Last date of taking printout of application form, attendance slip and admit card: 23rd August 2014
  • Last date for receiving the printout of online application form: 23rd August 2014
  • Examination date: December 21

UGC yet to update notification on its website. All the information are tentative till the time
