NMIMS announced admission for Executive (part time) PhD in management and full time PhD 2018

If you are looking for a quality Ph.D. then definitely NMIMS is one of the top institutes you should bank upon.  It is rigorous, it is full of integrity and yes, you really need to work hard to earn it. 

NMIMS does not accept any research scholar easily. When I discussed with the institute, they are very clear on following things:
1. Quality of the research.
2. Strong fundamental knowledge about the topic in which you are proposing your research. Most of the applicants are rejected for this reason only.
3. Should have strong grips on research methodology.  You should be well aware of the variable, type of research, research design and language.   
 4. Your research should have strong value addition, not something like "studying accounting system of Thane Municipal Corporation"

What is the process?

You first need to register online. After registering, you need to submit all the supporting documents to the university including Ph.D. Statement of Purpose (SOP) or research proposal. you are not allowed to appear for entrance if you have not submitted the research proposal and other documents.

What are the documents need to be submitted?

Copy of duly filled up the online application form
 Attested copies of Graduation Mark sheet and Degree Certificate (Convocation certificate)
 Attested copies of Post-Graduation Mark sheet and Degree Certificate (Convocation certificate)
 Work Experience certificate (5 years’ experience) (as applicable) (If the work experience certificate is in more than one company a separate work experience certificate signed by the employer stating clearly the nature of work experience is to be submitted.
The work experience certificate must contain the date of joining, designation, date of relieving (if applicable) and the level at which the designation is covered in the organization.
 If the current designation or the designation at the time of leaving the organization (as applicable) is/was different than the designation at the time of joining then in such case candidate must provide the copy of the appointment letter.

 Statement of Purpose (format available on website www.nmims.edu). SOP should describe the area of research.
 UGC-NET (including JRF)/UGC-CSIR NET (including JRF)/SLET/GATE examination or other equivalent examinations certificate (if appeared)
No Candidate will be permitted to attend admission test unless he/ she submits the application along with SOP in time AND completes the selection process successfully.

What are the eligibility criteria for admission?
Eligibility for Full Time / Part Time Ph.D.:
Candidates for admission to the programme shall have a Master's degree or a professional degree declared equivalent to the Master’s degree by the corresponding statutory regulatory body, with at least 55% marks in aggregate or its equivalent grade 'B' in the UGC 7-point scale (or an equivalent grade in a point scale wherever grading system is followed) or an equivalent degree from a foreign educational Institution accredited by an Assessment and Accreditation Agency which is approved, recognized or authorized by an authority, established or incorporated under a law in its home country or any other statutory authority in that country for the purpose of assessing, accrediting or assuring quality and standards of educational institutions.

Note for Part-Time Ph.D.
 Part Time Ph. D. (Working Executives / Academics Mode) will require at least 5 year Full Time Work experience in executive or supervisory capacity up to the date of written test / personal interview (out of which at least 2 years work experience should be after obtaining Master’s Degree)  The experience should be full-time experience and will NOT include part-time experience, internships, projects, training period, trainee (management, engineering) etc. Note for both Full Time and Part Time Ph.D.

I have done my masters by distance and part-time mode from a UGC recognized university, am I eligible?

 Those candidates who have obtained their degree by doing a part-time course or through distance learning, correspondence courses, externally, an open school/ university from recognized University are eligible to apply and register as per UGC guidelines. 




 Candidates appearing or awaiting for final year result are not eligible to apply. Candidates are required to submit all mark sheet/s / certificates at the time of admission.

Candidates are required to submit Graduation & Master’s degree all mark sheets for all years, also AIU Certificate (University Equivalence) is mandatory for those candidates who have completed their post-graduation from Overseas Universities.

What is the duration of the program?
Duration of the Programme: Minimum 3 years and Maximum 6 years (including coursework)

Alright, what is the format of Statement of Purpose or Research proposal?





Format for preparing  

SOP Title: The Title of the project should be concise (with sub-title, if any) reflecting the scope of the investigation.

Aim of the proposed area of research: The broad Aim of the research emphasizing the overall thrust of the proposed investigation should be clearly mentioned.

Statement of the Problem: The problem to be investigated should be clearly contextualized in the theoretical framework of the discipline.

Overview of Literature: The problem identified should be logically linked to other studies on the theme in the literature delineating the need for the present investigation.

Conceptual Framework: The concepts to be used, their relevance and applicability to the study and their operationalization should be indicated.

Research Questions or Hypotheses: The research questions to be answered/ addressed need to be unequivocally stated.


Research Methodology: 
(a) Coverage: The proposal should clearly indicate the universe of the study, sampling frame, sampling methods, sampling size, units of observation etc.
(b) Data Collection: The proposal should indicate sources of data types of data, tools and techniques for collection of various categories of proposed data.
(c) Data Analysis: It should indicate the statistical techniques, if any, proposed to be used in data processing, specific packages for data analysis, content analysis, indices/scaling techniques proposed to be used etc.

Implications: The proposal should state whether this research would bring forth any implications for policy making either for the region concerned or the country, any methodological innovations or contribute to theory building.

References: The proposal should include a 'List of References' mentioned in the text along with other important recent additions to the literature on the theme. The references should indicate the author, title, publisher and year of publication.




What is the fee for the Ph.D. program?

For pre-PhD, as of now, it is Rs 80,000



I intend to do full-time Ph.D. from NMIMS. Will I get any stipend?

Yes, as per the UGC norm (around 25000 per month) limited, subject to certain condition.

I am full time working corporate executive, so may I apply for part-time Ph.D.?
Yes, you can. However, for pre-PhD, please note that for a period of 1 year, you need to visit campus for 1 year every Saturday,



Is Ph.D. program really hectic?

Yes, if it is NMIMS, focus on quality is very high. You cannot just do copy paste work. Your every work goes through the rigorous process and each soft copy of the work is checked for plagiarism. It is not like doing Ph.D. from the University of Mumbai or other mediocre public universities and degree selling private universities from Chattisgarh, MP, Rajasthan, Himachal, Uttarakhand, UP, and northeast. you really have to make yourself eligible to earn it. you cannot buy it.
