What is in your mind when you think about an MBA degree? A well-paid job, a business, a degree to enhance your career prospect? A lot more?
Well, yes, a lot more than this.
NMIMS is India's top 10 business school and only business school in India awarding a part-time MBA in social entrepreneurship. It is sad to see that either people do not have awareness of the course being offered and how it benefits.
Well, before starting the course details, let me mention about its alumnus and their feedback.
1. Raj Janagam- Co-Founder and CEO, Surge Impact
2. Aziz Fidai, Associate Vice President, Axis Bank Foundation
"The course has helped me to increase my inner confidence and the made me believe that nothing is impossible in this world. When I joined the course, it was so rigorous. Reaching and attending classes on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, sacrificing personal life and managing with the day to day corporate role paid me off well. Everyone whether in CSR or not, whether in social entrepreneurship or not must join the course."
3. Ash Gulati, Social Entrepreneur and Founder, Maths Revolution and Manager- Guest Relation at Flame University
"At age 42, taking an MBA for me seemed almost impossible, until I came to know about the Part Time MBA at NMIMS, Mumbai, that too with specialization in Social Entrepreneurship (my passion). It was manageable since only weekends were getting used and for the rest of the time, I could earn a salary. Thus, after discussing with my employer, family and kids, I took the plunge.
Each hour spend, emotion experienced, learning given by faculty and peer were indeed worth the investment of time and money. I realized, at that age, it was as much of unlearning, as it was about learning. Being in the top 8 out of 340+ entries, at ‘Chancellors Challenge Business Plan Competition’ also became possible, as I met my social venture potential partners, right there, in my class itself.
Yes! if I get another life, I would want to do this again, for sure, with the same pool of mates that studied and travelled together. It was transformational!"
4. Govind Sharma, VP- Operations and HR, TBD India Limited, Founder- Samvad Foundation and blogger (Simplycareer.net ) :) yeah it's me :)
"I have no words to describe the program. Doing MBA again was a rewarding and working with the mixed team like the group which was highly focused on the mark and didn't want a pedigree lower than that, facing conflict with them, accepting criticism and getting a true performance appraisal from the faculty were few of them I cherish. Faculty like Simi ma'am shaped the way I used to communicate (I still repeat those mistakes but conscious about it) designing performance management System in a better way were few of the great things. Faculty like Dr Meena Galiara taught great leadership lesson like supporting those who need it most, keeping emotion at a bay while making decision, compassion and ethics at high. She introduced me to Hofstede's cultural dimension and as a result, I am doing an advanced research in Hofstede's dimension in Francophone Africa as an M Phil African Studies in the centre for African Studies, University of Mumbai. Dr Satish MK, Dr Meena Galiara and Dr Subroto Chatterjee and Dr Vidya Naik helped me a lot to improve my research skills and how to write a good research paper. Prof. Arti Deo who helped me to overcome the fear from Statistics. I fondly remember her when in an HR event, Prabir Jha said: "HR should know statistics". Yes, agree to Ash- Yes! if I get another life, I would want to do this again, for sure, with the same pool of mates that studied and travelled together. It was transformational! It has given me many friends like Rajiv, Kirthi, Sandeep, Umesh, Tanu, Kavita, Ruchika , Sunita and many more. I cherish the moment.
5. Shabdagandha Kulkarni
( Team Leader- Public Affairs and CSR, Coca Cola): Nowadays, what companies look not just for people who have the sound subject knowledge base, but most importantly for candidates who have acquired additional knowledge on business and a wide range of relevant aspects. This course helped me to develop my leadership skills.

Why "Social" Entrepreneur?
Just as entrepreneurs change the face of business, social entrepreneurs act as the change agents for society, seizing opportunities others miss to improve systems, invent new approaches, and create solutions to change society for the better. While a business entrepreneur might create entirely new industries, a social entrepreneur develops innovative solutions to social problems and then implements them on a large scale.

Why Diploma and MBA Social Entrepreneurship from NMIMS is a good option?
NMIMS is among the top 10 B schools in India. It has the reputation. The MBA programme is recognized by AICTE. Its MBA and not a diploma programme thus, you are also eligible for higher studies in India and abroad. The fee is highly subsidised and competitive. Other executive MBA programme of NMIMS costs around 4.5 lakhs, whereas MBA in SE costs around 1 lakhs (please reconfirm fee with the university).
What is the eligibility criteria?
for Diploma, its graduation and for MBA SE, it is graduation + minimum 2 years experience in the social sector such as social organisation, NGO, executives working in the CSR department of the corporate. The good thing is, from this year, anyone with corporate experience (even experience from the non-CSR background) can apply.
How is the quality of the curriculum?
Well, my experience is, few subjects are just like other MBA programme, too theoretical, but few subjects such as oral communication, written communication, Group and organisational dynamics, social engineering and project management, financial accounting etc. are very good and adds value. I have seen the excellent transformation in one of my batch mates. It also depends on you as a learner. Few of my best experience had been with seminar paper presentation, statistical analysis, research methodology, performance management, communication, training and development, CSR, Social Engineering and Project Management, Micro Economics, macroeconomics, Legal Environment of organisation, guest lectures and microfinance. You really get a lot of insight.
How students are evaluated?
It is same as other executive MBA and full-time MBA programmes of NMIMS. It has components like quiz, individual assignment including presentation, group presentation, mid-term test and term end exam.
How is the course structure?
Each course is divided as trimester. There is total 7 trimester in 2 years programme.
How hectic is the course?
It's really hectic, take everything out of you and make you a polished individual. Apart from class, you have to spend a lot of time on reading, collecting information, working in group etc. For 2 years you really have to sacrifice your personal life and luxury.
How is the faculty?
Mix. few are with corporate experience. Dr Meen Galiara is really good and you learn a lot from her. Mine best learning was while writing a project proposal for funding. Same experience I had with Prof. Subroto Chatterjee for microeconomics and macroeconomics, Ananya Prabhavalkar in financial accounting, Prof. Simi Vij (excellent trainer and mentor I must say). They also organise visiting faculty from the industry, which provides industrial insight. I had good experience with Tata, Masoom etc. Luckily, for my research paper, I got Prof. Subroto Chatterjee as a guide. It has sharpened my skills and I knew actually research is.
Do they provide placement?
NMIMS does not provide placement support for part-time MBA through sharing of the job openings and in fact many recruiter regularly ask to share their job opening with the students. None of the part time and executive MBA in the world offer campus placement, but you really find this support at NMIMS (not a campus placement but support and inquiries from the corporate sectors) useful as you learn team management skills, presentation skills, entrepreneurship, some reality of entrepreneurship, network in the corporate. I am the only HR and from the corporate (other than social sector) in this batch. We have people from Axis Bank foundation, Kotak education foundation, an entrepreneur like Ash from math revolution etc.
What is the no of seats available and how admission is given?
30 seats for each- Diploma and MBA
Admission is done on the basis of entrance test, which is easy and tests your aptitude (it's not NMAT or CAT or CET) and interview.
